RV Comfort Systems is proud to offer our new "Two-Stage 30/50 Kit" for the existing CheapHeat™ Add-on systems. This will allow our customers to upgrade their system so as to operate on either 30A or 50A shore power services. With this kit installed, your CheapHeat™ will automatically switch between LOW and MEDIUM or HIGH heat depending on whether you are plugged into 30A or 50A service respectively.

Important Operational Information

The LOW heat configuration is typically designed for and used in smaller RV's (20-25 ft. in length) and as such has lower heating capability. This is because a 30A/120VAC service has only 33% of the power available when compared to a 50A/240VAC service. When the CheapHeat™ Add-on System is used with the Two-Stage 30/50 Kit, and the RV is connected to 30A shore power, the heater will operate in LOW heat configuration and generate 66% less heat. In larger RV's if and when connected to a 30A service, the CheapHeat™ system will be capable of warming the coach in mild weather (especially in autumn and spring), but will not be capable of maintaining a comfortable inside temperature on very cold winter days. Regardless, the Two-Stage 30/50 Kit is very capable of offering "freeze protection" for when the RV is in storage or otherwise unoccupied and plugged into a 20A or greater service.

Also of note, the CheapHeat™ system consumes approximately 15A of power when in LOW heat configuration, thus you will only have approximately 10A of power remaining for other 120VAC appliances which should include your 12V converter, TV, electric water heater, etc. Exceeding the 10A margin will likely result in tripping the 30A breaker at the site power pedestal.

Technical

This kit will require 10/3 Romex® wire (3 conductor + 1 ground) from the breaker box all the way through the controller, to the heating element terminal block. Also, the color codes and wire connections shown on the instructions MUST be followed exactly, without exception, for the system to work correctly and be safe. To make certain there is no confusion, RV Comfort Systems will ask that everyone who buys a Two-Stage 30/50 Kit agree to follow the specific wiring requirements and understand that at LOW heat, the system will only provide 1/3 of the heat that the HIGH heat setting would provide. Lastly, and most importantly, all local, state, and national electrical codes must be adhered to and qualified personnel should only perform the installation.
